The Opening Night concert at the Hollywood Bowl is a defining moment of the start of summer in LA. Over 100 years of history at the iconic venue attracts popular headliners and lots of guests to help fundraise for the LA Philharmonic and its community programs. The task was to interpret the seasonal graphics into an exciting invitation package intended to sell tickets. The iconic bowl shape inspired the flat graphics backing a cut out of that year’s performer, John Legend. We used a unique diecut that allowed us to fold a single sheet of paper into a 4-page booklet with two different sized pages.

With over a century of high-profile headliners like John Legend, the event requires an invitation that feels both celebratory and prestigious. The challenge was to create a distinctive print piece that captured the spirit of the season and the venue’s iconic identity, while remaining conscientious of budget constraints.

We aimed to translate the seasonal event branding into a memorable and compelling printed invitation that would drive ticket sales and reflect the prestige of the evening. The invitation needed to visually reference the iconic Bowl venue, spotlight the featured artist, and serve both practical and aesthetic purposes in a single, creative format.

The final design used a unique die-cut technique to transform a single sheet of paper into a 4-page booklet with staggered page sizes, adding layers of visual interest. Inspired by the bowl’s distinct shape, the layout paired bold, seasonal graphics with a striking cutout silhouette of John Legend. The inventive format and vibrant design contributed to strong early engagement and helped generate enthusiasm and ticket sales for one of LA’s signature summer events.

A custom diecut created dimension around John Legend’s silhouette and created the unique invitation structure out of a single sheet of paper, keeping production costs down.

Diecuts in the back page held the reply materials, making for a single cohesive package.

The graphics we developed were extended to other applications such as screens at the event location.
